About these names

Clothing brand names with the .com free

A clothing name has to work at two extremes: large on a shopfront or lookbook, and tiny woven into a neck label. Short coined words handle both; descriptive phrases survive neither.

Fashion naming also has to age. Anything tied to a current silhouette, subculture or season becomes a liability the moment the range moves on, which is why most durable clothing brands are surnames or invented words rather than descriptions.

Common questions

Is a made-up word better than my own surname?
A surname is fine if it is short and spellable, but it ties the brand to you personally and complicates a sale later. A coined word is easier to trademark and does not have to be explained down the phone.
Does the name need to signal the category?
No. Product photography does that instantly and better. A name that says clothing or apparel spends its only asset — distinctiveness — on information the customer already has.
What about matching social handles?
Coined names are the only ones with a real chance of a clean handle across platforms. That is a large part of why they are worth more than dictionary words.
